Do It Yourself Tips For Water Damage At Home

Water damage can happen in any household. A leaking pipe might damage the interior walls. The washing machine might develop a leak. The roof of the house might begin to leak. Some of these can be prevented; some of them cannot be prevented.

When water damages occur in the house due to leaking pipes, roofs, appliances or any other reason for that matter, the first thing that we often do is call a specialist who deals with restoration in case of water damage. Professional help can be useful in cases where the water damage is extensive and too complex for a homeowner to handle.

However, for simple and minor water damages you do not often need the help of a professional. Hiring a professional can be expensive. To cut back on costs and save money, hiring an expert should be avoided when a simple repair job can fix the water damage problem. Here are some tips which you can use yourself at home for fixing water damage.

1. In case of a leaky roof, find the faulty tiles or shingles. Lift them around the edges, remove them and discard them. Scrape off the cement or glue in the area. Put the new tiles or shingles in their place. Use a hammer to nail them. Seal the new pieces firmly with roof cement.

2. In case of a leaking flashing, place new flashings on top of the old ones. Fasten the new flashings with the help of a strong glue or roof tar. Make sure that the area is airtight and watertight.

3. If the water is coming in from the chimney, use a chimney cap. It will stop the water from entering the house.

4. In case there is snow on the roof, remove it using a rake. Use a ladder to reach the roof. Begin at the lowest part of the roof and then slowly go towards the top of the roof. Do not stand on a snow-covered roof. Make sure that you do not damage any of the shingles on the roof.

5. Hang clothes, curtains, sheets and other textiles on a clothesline to dry them up. You can also put them in the dryer. If there are stains on fabrics due to water damage, wash them off before drying them.

6. Dry books and documents using fans or blow dryers. Dry them indoors. Bear in mind that inks and photos are sensitive to sunlight. Avoid putting them under direct sunlight.

7. Tilt and place water damaged cushions, pillows and mattresses in such a way that both sides are equally exposed to fresh air and sunlight.

8. Use air filters, dehumidifiers and purifiers to improve the quality of air inside your house. This will help control the moisture in the house and prevent the formation of molds in the house.

These simple yet effective do-it-yourself tips can help you deal with water damage. They will not only help you recover your house and possessions from water damage but also save you the money which is involved in hiring a water damage restoration professional.
